Scratch the 32.5MP assumption. The latest update from Canon Rumors says the Canon EOS R8 Mark II is lined up for a full-frame ~24MP CMOS sensor — not the 32.5MP chip used in the EOS R6 Mark III and Cinema EOS C50.
That is a meaningful course correction for anyone expecting the entry-level full-frame body to inherit Canon’s newest stills/video resolution platform.
24MP instead of 32.5MP
Many watchers (including earlier rumor rounds) assumed the R8 Mark II would step up to 32.5MP. Canon Rumors now says that does not look likely.
A 24MP sensor still fits the R8 brief: keep the body approachable, leave more room for speed and pricing, and avoid pushing the camera into R6 / R5 territory on megapixels alone.
Open questions remain:
- Is it a new 24MP design?
- Or a re-use / tweak of the 24.2MP sensor from the EOS R6 Mark II?
One thing Canon Rumors rules out pretty firmly: it will not be the EOS R1 sensor.
Timing: sometime in September
Announcement timing is still soft, but the current window is mid-September 2026, or later that month. Expect the camera to land with a few new lenses rather than as a lone body drop.
Retro look still expected
The retro-design rumor is unchanged. Canon Rumors is still working under the assumption that the R8 Mark II goes a “retro” route — while admitting nobody knows what that actually looks like yet.
More details are expected soon. Until Canon confirms anything, treat the sensor report as a strong rumor update rather than a final spec sheet.
