So Ive been stressing about this for like three weeks now, ever since I finally picked up an M10 last month. I keep dropping it back into my bag because the stock strap is digging into my neck whenever I walk around downtown Chicago for more than an hour.
I looked at Artisan & Artist silk straps cause everyone online seems to love them, but then I read a bunch of threads saying they fray easily if you wear them with a heavy winter coat, which Im definitely gonna be doing soon since its freezing here. My logic was maybe a leather one would be more durable, but then I worry about the metal rings scratching up the body. Ive got a strict $100 budget left after buying extra batteries, so I cant really experiment with five different brands.
I saw some people recommending Dead Cameras and Cooph too, but honestly Im just getting overwhelmed by all the options tbh. What strap are you guys actually using on your Ms that wont ruin the lugs or my neck?
Honestly, ditch the stock strap immediately. It's basically a cheese grater for your neck. If you're worried about the metal rings scratching your M10, just look for anything that includes leather bumpers or 'flaps' that sit between the split ring and the camera body. That solves the scratching issue entirely. For a budget-friendly and super durable option, check these out:
- Peak Design Slide Lite
- It's synthetic but very soft, won't fray against a heavy coat, and the quick-link system is a lifesaver.
- Hyperion Camera Straps Rope Camera Strap
- These are super cheap, soft on the neck, and you can customize the length. NGL, the Peak Design anchors are the best part because you can take the strap off in two seconds when you're shooting handheld. Don't overthink it, just get something comfortable.
@Reply #2 - good point! Listen, you have an M10, so please prioritize protecting that finish. If you go leather, just make sure to use Leica Leather Protection Flaps to keep the rings from biting into the lugs. I personally use the Rock n Roll Straps Greek Handmade Rope Strap. It is super soft on the neck, very sturdy, and won't snag on your heavy coat. Just double-check your ring attachments periodically for wear.
> my neck is literally dying I switched to Peak Design Leash three years ago. It solves the scratching issue with Hypalon tabs and costs under fifty bucks.
oh man this is exactly my thing, ive literally gone through like fourteen different straps since my m6 days and now my m10. chicago winters are brutal on gear too so i totally feel your pain on that winter coat fraying issue. skip the silk ones for now tbh, especially if youre on a strict hundo budget. id say grab the Artisan and Artist ACAM-E25R red dot canvas strap, usually runs right around 95 bucks so it fits your budget. canvas is lowkey way better for winter coats because it doesnt grip your wool jacket like sticky rubber or catch fibers like silk. plus it comes with those leather flap protectors so the metal rings wont scratch up your gorgeous m10 body lugs at all. if you want pure leather comfort though, look at the Tap and Dye Artisan Synchronicity sling. its slightly over at like 115 maybe depending on shipping, but holy cow the padded neck section saves you during long walks by the lake. i used one all last january down on michigan ave and my neck didnt hurt once. anyway bottom line is protect those lugs and save your neck from freezing city pain...
@Reply #3 - good point! Ngl, I was totally stressing about the exact same thing when I got my setup last month. Tbh, watching YouTube teardowns and reading old Reddit threads saved me a ton of money. If you want a solid resource, check out the manual on the Leica Camera USA site or browse the gear reviews on Red Dot Forum for real-world lug wear tests. Since you are on a strict $100 budget, lowkey the best move is getting the Artisan & Artist ACAM-E25R which usually runs around $95, or check out Hardgraft Classic Camera Strap if you can find it on sale. Just make sure whatever you pick has leather guards so the rings don't chew up your M10 top plate. Idk if this applies to every single batch, but most rope straps hold up way better against winter coats than silk does.
Same setup here, love it
omg I have this exact same issue... been dealing with it for like two months now and still nothing works. Saw this earlier but just now responding cause ive been out freezing my hands off trying to shoot in this chicago weather and my neck is literally dying. idkkk how everyone else just figures this out instantly, ive wasted so much time staring at tabs trying to pick something that wont shred my skin or my camera body. its so frustrating tbh.
Adding my two cents—I made my own heavy-duty leather strap for like fifteen bucks in total. Why pay sixty for Artisan & Artist Silk Strap when a bit of scrap leather from the hardware store lasts ten years?
