im honestly so fed up with my current setup and im ready to just sell everything and switch to something else tbh... like, Ive been shooting with this modern super-sharp 50mm on my Leica M10 for months now and its just driving me nuts. Photos feel way too clinical, almost sterile, and completely lack that soul I keep seeing in other peoples work. I shoot mostly casual street photography and travel stuff, nothing too crazy, but I want images with character, some nice falloff, and maybe a bit of that classic vintage glow without having to spend Leica-custom-shop money, you know?
Im relatively comfortable with manual focusing since thats half the point of shooting rangefinders anyway, but my budget is kinda tight right now—id really prefer to stay under the $800 to $1000 mark if possible.
So here are my actual requirements for whatever lens I get next:
- LTM or M mount so I dont need weird adapters
- 35mm or 50mm focal length
- Real vintage character (swirly bokeh or nice rendering is a plus)
- Usable wide open, not just a paperweight
What are actually the best vintage lenses for the M10 that wont completely break the bank? Im kinda lost looking at all the LTM Canon, Summicron, and Summarit options online...
Late to the party but I went through this exact same crisis last year with my M10. Got so sick of the modern sterile look that I almost sold the whole kit. Swapping to vintage glass completely fixed it for me ngl. Here are a couple solid options under your budget that weren't mentioned yet:
- Leica Summar 50mm f2: Usually goes for $300 to $500 depending on the coating condition. It has insane vintage character, nice soft glow wide open, and fits the M mount natively with an LTM adapter. Just watch out for cleaning marks on the soft glass.
- Voigtlander Color Skopar 35mm f2.5: Runs about $450 new. It's technically modern, but it has this punchy, old-school rendering that completely avoids that clinical look without being a total mess wide open. Idk if the Summar is too old-school for your taste since it's from the 1930s, but it definitely cured my clinical glass burnout. Good luck with the hunt.
Regarding what #5 said about "Like someone mentioned, this lens crisis happens to" everyone eventually, they're totally right. If you go the vintage route on a budget, I'd recommend checking out an Olympus Zuiko 50mm f1.4 with an adapter, or keeping an eye out for a clean Leica Summar 50mm f2. Just make sure to inspect the glass for haze under a flashlight before buying, and double-check that the aperture blades aren't oily — I'd recommend getting it professionally CLA'd if you're not sure about the condition, just to save yourself headaches later.
> Photos feel way too clinical, almost sterile, and completely lack that soul this comes up a lot tbh. everyone goes through that clinical-modern-glass phase before running screaming back to vintage lenses lol. search the forum, theres a ton of threads about this, but the short answer is you want something with single coating and some character. for under a grand, grab a Canon LTM 50mm f1.4 (often called the Japanese Summicron). you can find clean copies for around $300-$400. its pretty sharp stopped down, but wide open you get this gorgeous vintage glow and nice falloff without it turning into a total mess. if you want a 35mm instead, look at the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.4 SC. its technically a modern lens, but the single-coated (SC) version is designed purely to mimic classic 60s rendering with gorgeous flares and classic bokeh. runs right around $600 new too. either of these will fix your sterile look real quick...
^ This. Also, check out Industar 61 L/D 52mm f2.8 for like $80 or grab a Jupiter 8 50mm f2 instead. Insane character, dirt cheap, fits your M10 no problem.
Lowkey went through this exact lens crisis last year tbh. Grabbed a Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.4 and it totally fixed that sterile vibe with some gorgeous classic glow.
Like someone mentioned, this lens crisis happens to everyone. Ive been through three of these. Honestly just search for vintage leica M character lenses on youtube or reddit, theres endless threads about it.
Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.
