What is the actual best sports lens for the Canon EOS R6 that won't cost me an entire paycheck? Honestly, I'm just so fed up with my current setup—I’m currently rocking the RF 24-105mm f/4L, and while it's great for travel, it is absolutely useless for field sports. I tried shooting my nephew’s soccer game last weekend and it was a total disaster; the AF struggled in the late afternoon light and the reach just isn't there, so I spent the whole time cropping into mushy, pixelated garbage.
I’ve spent hours digging through reviews on DPReview and YouTube. I keep seeing people swear by the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1, but I’m worried that f/7.1 is going to be a nightmare when the sun starts to dip (which is when these games happen!). Then I looked at the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 II with an adapter—which seems like a solid, cheaper route—but I hate the idea of adding extra bulk with the mount adapter when I’m already trying to keep the R6 rig somewhat portable for sidelines.
I’m an enthusiast level shooter, mostly doing field sports and a bit of wildlife on the side. I really need something with decent reach that can actually track focus without hunting every five seconds because my current lens just gives up the ghost the second a player runs toward me. My budget is around $2,500, maybe a bit more if it’s truly worth the stretch, but I just can't justify the crazy prime lens prices.
Oh, also—does anyone know if the third-party stuff like Sigma or Tamron is even worth considering yet for RF mount? I saw some rumors but nothing concrete and I’m tired of wasting money on gear that doesn't deliver. Am I better off just biting the bullet on the native RF glass or is there a hidden gem I’m missing here? I just want to capture some clean, sharp shots without wanting to throw my camera in the trash...
> I’m worried that f/7.1 is going to be a nightmare when the sun starts to dip Look, you are right. f/7.1 is too slow for evening games. Your R6 sensor is fine, but you need glass that gathers light. Forget the variable aperture stuff. If you want reach and speed without spending ten grand, stop looking for native RF primes. Buy the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM or the III version. Listen, you said you hate the adapter, but it is the only way to get pro-level glass for under $2,500. The Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R adds negligible weight and zero optical penalty. It works flawlessly on the R6. You can find the lens used for around $1,200 to $1,500. It tracks fast and stays sharp. Don't waste money on unproven third-party glass. Get the EF pro glass and be done with it.
Just catching up here—before you spend, what field size are you shooting? I’d suggest looking at the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM. Just make sure your ISO is set correctly.
