Honestly, I am so frustrated with my current setup. I'm using an EOS R6 but my shots of my kids playing soccer are consistently soft and just not cutting it. I’m ready to upgrade to something sharper that actually keeps up with the autofocus.

Here is what I need:

  • Primarily shooting field sports and some wildlife
  • Needs to be an RF mount (or EF with adapter)
  • Budget is around $2,500 max
  • Decent reach is a must

Is the RF 100-500mm worth the massive price tag, or should I look at the 70-200mm f/2.8 with a teleconverter instead? What is actually worth the money?

Honestly, I feel your pain. I started with a kit lens for sports and it was a nightmare—the autofocus just couldn't keep up with the kids at all. If you're really serious about field sports, the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM is actually worth every penny. Ngl, it’s pricey, but the reach is insane and it locks onto subjects way faster than the adapter-plus-EF lens combos I've tried. I lowkey wouldn't bother with the 70-200mm f/2.8 plus a teleconverter—it’s just a hassle and you lose a stop of light. For soccer, you really need that extra reach to get those tight shots of them running down the field. Just grab the RF 100-500mm, trust me, you won't regret the sharpness on the R6 sensor.

Skip the teleconverter, it's a waste of money. I bought the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM used for $1,300 and paired it with a cheap mount adapter. It saved me a ton compared to the RF version. It handles soccer field distances perfectly. My DIY fix was just cleaning the contacts with isopropyl alcohol; dealer wanted $400 for 'repairs' but I did it for $80 total including the lens deal.

So funny you ask this — last summer I was standing on the exact same soccer sideline with my Canon EOS R6 thinking my gear was broken until I realized I was using the wrong shutter speeds for the lighting conditions. Before you drop $2,500 on new glass, I need to know one thing: what shutter speed and tracking settings are you currently using on your R6? Once you clarify that, here are two alternative options to consider within your budget:

Been thinking on this... honestly just go with any prime glass from Sigma, their stuff is wild.

  • insane sharpness
  • fast af
  • build quality Anyway, I just started collecting vintage fountain pens...

^ This. Also, rarely post here but saw this and had to chime in. Everyone is arguing about the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM versus adapted EF glass, but honestly you just need to look up a proper comparison.

  • Search YouTube for Canon R6 soccer lens reviews
  • Check Reddit's sports photography threads
  • Look at sample galleries on Fred Miranda There's a great video comparing the autofocus speed on these exact setups that pops up as the first result. Just search for it.
