Just picked up a used Ricoh GR III for my upcoming trip to Tokyo and honestly Im kinda freaking out because I leave in three days. I keep reading that people swear by Snap Focus at 2m but then I see others saying manual zone focusing is way better for street stuff, and im just confused since I usually shoot portraits with a prime lens on my DSLR. Im super new to this tiny sensor world and dont wanna miss the shot while fiddling with menus. Should I just stick to P-mode with auto-ISO or is that gonna ruin my shots? What are the actual go-to settings for quick street candid shots without it looking like a blurry mess?
> Stop trusting auto-everything. ^ This. I saved a ton by fixing my Ricoh GR III 24.2MP shutter myself for $40 rather than the $500 dealer quote. Manual settings maximize value.
@Reply #1 - good point! Everyone swears by f/8, but honestly, you're sacrificing way too much light. I prefer Ricoh GR III 24.2MP at f/4 or f/5.6. It keeps the background just soft enough to separate your subject. If you just blast everything at f/8, your ISO climbs into the mud real fast in Tokyo's alleys. Don't fall for the 'everything sharp' hype—sometimes a little depth is actually better for the final look.
Yep, this is the way
Man I wish I found this thread sooner. Would have saved me so much hassle.
Rarely post here, but saw this and had to chime in. Are you planning on mostly shooting in broad daylight or hitting those neon-lit alleyways at night? Knowing that changes everything. Before you stress, just keep these in mind: 1. Set your focus distance permanently.
- Stop trusting auto-everything. Honestly, if you want something easier than this, just go with a different brand altogether—any mirrorless from Sony is usually foolproof for beginners.
Rarely post but saw this and had to chime in. Regarding what #8 said about "👆 this" - honestly, dont get too hung up on the technical perfection. I spent my first two days in Shinjuku obsessing over focus settings and missed some incredible candid moments because I was staring at the back of my screen. Once I stopped messing with the menus and just committed to a preset, everything clicked.
- How much time do you actually want to spend editing these shots after your trip?
- Are you looking for that gritty, high-contrast black and white look or are you planning on shooting color street photography? I personally just leave mine in a fixed zone focus and treat the camera like an extension of my arm. Just go out and shoot, Tokyo is sensory overload anyway and you dont wanna be a menu-diver the whole time...
Congrats on the Ricoh GR III 24.2MP, it's a beast for Tokyo! Ngl, don't overthink it.
- Set it to TAv mode (shutter speed at 1/500 to freeze motion).
- Snap focus at 2m is life-changing, just use f/8 so everything stays sharp.
- Auto-ISO is totally fine, tbh. Don't stress about P-mode, just lock that snap focus and you'll catch everything. Have the best time!
Listen, stop overthinking the tech. Youre gonna miss the shot if you keep staring at the screen like a manual. Just set your camera to shutter priority and keep that speed up. Tokyo is dark in the alleys, so dont be scared of cranking up the ISO. Honestly, just grab any reliable gear from a brand like Canon or Nikon if you want to keep it simple. Youre there to see the city, not fight a menu.
