Just picked up a Ricoh GR IIIx for street photography in NYC. The thing feels like a toy and I'm honestly terrified of dropping it or scratching the lens while it's in my bag. I've been searching for a decent case all morning and I'm losing my mind.

I looked at the official Ricoh GC-11, but people on Amazon are saying it's way overpriced for what it is. Then I saw a bunch of neoprene pouches recommended on Reddit, but I'm worried those provide zero impact protection if I actually smack the camera against a subway pole. I need something slim enough to fit in a pocket but sturdy enough to actually protect the thing. I have about $60 to spend and need it before a trip next weekend.

Are there any third-party cases that aren't bulky bricks but actually offer legit protection? Does anyone have experience with the JJC ones or should I just bite the bullet and overpay for the leather Ricoh one?

Regarding what #2 said about the Ricoh being fragile, I totally agree — seen way too many busted lens extensions. This comes up a lot, but honestly, skip the fancy leather. If you want real protection without the bulk, look at these:

Regarding what #2 said about "The Ricoh GR series is notoriously fragile," they are spot on about the lens assembly. This comes up a lot, but are you carrying the camera inside a dedicated bag pocket or just tossing it into a main compartment with keys and other gear? If it is the latter, you need a hard-shell case. Pouches like the MegaGear Ever Ready Leather Case offer scratch protection, but they do very little against a hard impact on a subway pole. If you want structural rigidity within your budget, check out the JJC Hard Shell Camera Case for Ricoh GR IIIx. It provides a much stiffer barrier than neoprene. I recommend picking up a tempered glass screen protector as well, as those are the first things to get scratched in a bag.

Oh man, this is exactly my thing. I have spent years obsessing over finding the perfect balance between minimal bulk and actual impact resistance for premium compacts. The Ricoh GR series is notoriously fragile, especially the lens barrel assembly, so you are right to be concerned. Do not fall for the trap of buying basic neoprene sleeves; they stop scratches but offer zero protection against a hard knock on a metal subway pole. Here is what you need to prioritize:

  • Ensure the case has a rigid internal structure or high-density foam padding to disperse kinetic energy.
  • Check for a firm closure mechanism so the camera cannot slide out if your bag is tipped over.
  • Confirm the internal dimensions allow for a snug fit; any internal movement during a drop dramatically increases damage risk. Avoid anything that uses magnetic snaps near the lens or sensor. Anyway, bottom line is focus on rigid shells over soft pouches if you want to keep that lens functioning.

Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.

Good to know!

Building on the earlier suggestion, skip the official leather. Everyone pushes Ricoh GC-11 but it's overpriced branding. Try MegaGear Ever Ready Case for better impact resistance at half the cost.

I dropped my first compact years ago; repair shop wanted $350, but I fixed it myself for $40 in parts. Since then, I use a JJC Camera Pouch which cost me $18. It’s saved me a ton. Why pay $60+ for a brand name? It's a waste of money over five years.

Man, I feel your pain. I spent all of last week in a similar headspace, just staring at my camera and stressing about the exact same thing — it’s basically an expensive, fragile paperweight if you don't find the right housing for it. I actually ended up having a mini-meltdown in the subway yesterday just thinking about how easy it would be to crush that lens assembly with my keys.

  • I've been carrying mine in a makeshift setup that barely fits, and honestly, every time I squeeze through a turnstile, I'm just waiting for that crunching sound.
  • It's funny how we spend all this money on a pocket camera and then immediately become paranoid about actually putting it in a pocket.
  • I'm still just winging it with my current setup, but yeah, the anxiety is definitely real.
