im stressing over finding the best backpack for my DJI Mavic 3 cuz I saw tons of people recommending the Lowepro DroneGuard, but then someone else said its too bulky for alpine hiking... im heading out on a 4-day wet coastal trek with about 25lbs total load, and Im totally lost on waterproofing vs access speed. what are you guys using for rough terrain and damp climates on a $200 budget?

This comes up a lot. I used the Lowepro Flipside 400 AW II on a wet coastal trek last year; zippers leaked after three hours. Switch to Shimoda Action X30 V2 with a rain cover.

Skip the dedicated drone bags. They charge double for foam inserts that fall apart in two years. I bought the Matador FreeFly16 for $90 last season, paired with a generic padded camera cube for $25. Total cost is $115, which works out to about $38 a year assuming a three-year lifespan so far. The waterproof cordura material handles coastal rain easily without needing an extra cover. Plus, the whole setup weighs under a pound empty, keeping your 25lb limit intact for your 4-day trek. I DIY-stitched some extra lash points on the side for my tripod last month, saved me buying a $300 photo pack. Dealer wanted $400 for a branded adventure bag, but I built this for a fraction of the cost.

Listen. Stop buying garbage drone bags. For a damp coastal trek you need real gear that wont leak. Grab an Ortlieb Waterproof Packman Pro2 for around 180 bucks. Throw your Mavic inside a padded cube. Done. Dry as a bone and it wont fall apart after three miles.

Listen, man — do not waste your cash on those overpriced specialty drone bags. I bought a standard North Face Recon Laptop Backpack off clearance for sixty bucks last year, added a generic padded insert from Amazon for fifteen, and it's been bulletproof. Dealer wanted $350 for a photo pack, but I built this whole setup for $75 total. Breaks down to about $25 a year over three seasons. Save your money for the trail snacks, seriously.

> waterproofing vs access speed Rarely post but... grab the Lowepro Pro Trekker BP 350 AW II instead of the DroneGuard. It hits right around your budget, crushes damp coastal weather with the built-in all-weather cover, and wont shift around when youre scrambling over wet rocks with 25lbs. Fast side access lets you grab the Mavic 3 without dumping your layers in the mud...

> waterproofing vs access speed Oh man this is exactly my thing. I've tested four different bags on coastal trails. Get the Shimoda Action X30 V2 for $230. The roll-top and PU-coated zippers actually survive horizontal rain, unlike the Lowepro DroneGuard 450 which leaks at the seams after two hours. Anyway, bottom line is the Shimoda wins for wet terrain.

Adding my two cents here because watching people drop fortune-sized money on camera packs always kills me. Dealer wanted four hundred bucks for a fancy branded drone bag when I was prepping for a damp multi-day trek with my kids, but I just modified an old internal frame pack I had in the garage. Spent literally fifteen bucks on a dry sack liner and some scrap foam from an old mattress pad (cost per year on that setup is practically zero now, seriously). Waterproofing vs access speed is totally a false choice if you just use a roll-top dry bag inside a normal hiking pack. Saved me a ton of cash — like, enough to take the whole family out to dinner twice. You don't need specialty gear for rough terrain, just some patience and a tube of seam sealer.

I am no expert since I just researched this last week, but are you taking the standard controller or the RC Pro? That changes the size needed. Check out the Lowepro Protactic BP 350 AW II for around $190.

Saw this and had to chime in. For a 4-day wet coastal trek with a 25lb total load, get the Shimoda Action X30 V2 or the F-Stop Loka UL 22L. The Shimoda runs around $230 if you hunt for a deal, but its roll-top design handles damp climates infinitely better than zipper-heavy drone bags. It keeps the Mavic 3 secure without killing your back on rough terrain.

Man, waterproofing on a budget for a coastal trek is tough — dealers wanted $350 for fancy camera bags, but I rigged my own setup. I grabbed a Crumpler Dry Red Bag 3 off clearance for like forty bucks and stuffed a padded camera cube inside. Cost me way less per year than those specialty packs.

  • Used a $10 silicone spray to waterproof it completely.
  • Added a generic insert. Saved a ton and my gear stayed bone dry.
